Description

The Clinical Risk Manager supports Emory Healthcare’s system-wide risk management and patient safety programs by identifying, investigating, and mitigating clinical and operational risks across all care settings.

This role leads the disclosure and apology process for serious adverse events, collaborates with clinical and operational leaders to reduce harm, and ensures compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements. The position develops and maintains risk reduction strategies, policies, and educational programs; analyzes safety and claims trends; and provides expert consultation regarding potential liability and patient safety concerns.

The Clinical Risk Manager also participates in organizational committees, supports regulatory reporting and product/device safety monitoring, and provides 24/7 on-call support for urgent safety issues.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Risk Identification & Mitigation

  • Lead and support the system-wide clinical risk management program by assessing institutional risks, adverse events, and near misses.

  • Investigate and analyze actual and potential risks and recommend mitigation and loss prevention strategies.

  • Manage and evaluate safety and claims trend data to reduce economic impact and improve patient outcomes.

  • Develop risk reduction initiatives aligned with patient safety and quality improvement efforts.

Event Response & Disclosure

  • Coordinate and guide care teams through the disclosure and apology process following serious adverse events.

  • Ensure timely internal investigations, appropriate notifications to claims and leadership, and follow-up actions consistent with just culture principles.

  • Serve as a primary advisor to providers and operational leaders on incident response, potential claims, and legal exposure.

Policy, Compliance & Regulatory Oversight

  • Develop, review, and revise risk management and patient safety policies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and accreditation requirements.

  • Monitor regulatory updates and communicate applicable changes to leadership and medical staff.

  • Support reporting obligations to state and federal regulatory agencies as required.

Education, Consultation & Culture Development

  • Design and deliver system-wide education on clinical risk management, disclosure practices, and patient safety topics.

  • Promote a culture of transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement consistent with Emory Healthcare’s Care Transformation Model and just culture framework.

  • Serve as a consultant to departments, clinical providers, and legal/claims teams on patient safety and risk mitigation strategies.

Collaboration & Operational Support

  • Partner with Quality, Patient Safety, Legal, Compliance, Public Safety, and operational leaders to align risk management initiatives with system priorities.

  • Participate in system-wide committees and initiatives that strengthen patient safety and risk prevention.

  • Provide 24/7 on-call coverage and support for urgent clinical and non-clinical safety concerns across all Emory Healthcare entities.

Work Environment

Work Type: Hybrid — position includes both remote and on-site work.

Travel: Occasional travel between Emory Healthcare operating units and affiliated locations may be required.

Minimum Required Qualifications

Education

One of the following:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

  • Master of Business Administration (MBA)

  • Master of Public Health Administration (MPHA)

  • Master of Social Work (MSW)

  • Juris Doctor (JD)

Experience

  • Minimum 3 years of healthcare experience in clinical, operational, or risk-related roles.

Licensure

For Registered Nurses:

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.

  • Valid, active, unencumbered Registered Nurse license approved by the Georgia Board of Nursing.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Clinical Risk Management Expertise

  • Knowledge of patient safety principles, adverse event investigation, disclosure and apology practices, and just culture frameworks.

Regulatory & Medical-Legal Knowledge

  • Understanding of federal and state healthcare regulations, accreditation standards (e.g., Joint Commission), medical device reporting, and healthcare liability concepts.

Analytical & Critical Thinking

  • Ability to evaluate adverse events, analyze safety and claims data, identify patterns, and recommend effective mitigation strategies.

Communication & Facilitation

  • Ability to coach providers through complex or sensitive conversations, facilitate multidisciplinary reviews, and produce clear documentation and reports.

Collaboration & Relationship Building

  • Experience working effectively with physicians, clinical leaders, operational teams, quality and patient safety teams, legal counsel, and regulatory agencies.

Organizational & Operational Management

  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent investigations, regulatory deadlines, high-risk events, and system-wide initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience

  • Prior experience in healthcare risk management or professional liability management.

Certification

  • Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) certification or eligibility to obtain certification.

Preferred Skills and Expertise

  • Experience with healthcare incident reporting and claims management platforms (e.g., RLDatix, RiskMaster, Press Ganey HRP).

  • Experience conducting complex adverse event investigations, root cause analyses (RCA), or patient safety reviews.

  • Prior leadership or committee participation in patient safety, quality improvement, or risk management programs.

  • Experience collaborating with legal counsel and applying medical-legal principles within clinical environments.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (Medium Max 25lbs): up to 25 lbs., 0-33% of the work day (occasionally) Lifting 25 lbs. max; Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs.; Occasional to frequent standing & walking, Occasional sitting, Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing), Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.

Environmental exposures include but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure, Bio-hazardous waste chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors, Communicable diseases, Electrical shock, Floor Surfaces, Hot/Cold Temperatures, Indoor/Outdoor conditions, Latex, Lighting, Patient care/handling injuries, Radiation, Shift work, Travel may be required. Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators, environmental conditions may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
