Description

As a Lead Sonographer for the OB/GYN department, you will be responsible for obstetric imaging in conjunction with other members of the defined health care team in the Emory Perinatal Center and/or Emory Reproductive Center.

May function in an environment with high-risk, severe issues and pregnancies, with complicated/complex medical conditions in pregnant mothers for example, diabetes, heart disease, or fetal problems, like genetic disorders, and birth defects. Primary duties and responsibilities Knowledge:

  • Aid colleagues in recognizing, interpreting, and managing unstable patient care situations. Act as a resource for students and junior technicians.
  • Utilize advanced knowledge of fetal abnormalities and their diagnosis. Proficient in performing scans of various anatomical areas and identifying cross sectional human anatomy, distinguishing normal from abnormal, to establish initial evaluation of sonograms.
  • Evaluate new products and equipment for potential future use. Utilize non-standard techniques, when necessary, with independent judgment, ingenuity, and initiative in the performance of ultrasonography for diagnosis.
  • Demonstrate critical care skills to patients with higher acuity. Participate in department quality assurance studies and prepare and maintain records of ultrasound examinations. Assist in the clinical instruction of OB/GYN residents.
  • Participate in the formal ultrasound education of the MFM fellows. Complexity: Regularly assume responsibility and provide direct care for the more complex patients. Perform diagnostic transvaginal and transabdominal obstetric ultrasound, which could include monitoring scans, nuchal translucency scans, detailed anatomy scan, fetal growth scan, biophysical profiles, umbilical cord flow Doppler, amniotic fluid indices, specialized Doppler studies, and fetal echocardiography.
  • Assist with ultrasound guidance for amniocentesis, chorionic villi sampling (CVS), sonohysterogram (SIS), fetal embryo transfer and assisting with prenatal diagnosis. Autonomy: Maintain documentation for internal and external regulatory purposes. Maintain education and competence files for employees.
  • Select proper transducer and technical factors for accurate ultrasound procedures, which may include Doppler, color Doppler imaging, M-mode, and real time. Calibrate, adjust, and maintain ultrasound equipment.
  • Create preliminary prenatal ultrasound reports for each study performed with detailed information regarding abnormalities identified. Review medical records to obtain necessary clinical information including patient history, lab results, and physician orders prior to examination, and communicate with patients to obtain historical data.
  • Keep section manager fully informed of section activities. Accountable for completion of employee orientation process.
  • Assist the department manager with coordinating staffing resources to fit the facility's needs. Help with the direction and guidance of departmental workflow. Excellent communication, interpersonal and patient service skills to work effectively with physicians, patients, and other staff members.

Minimum Required Education:

  • Associates Degree.
  • Experience: Three (3+) plus years OB/GYN Imaging experience.
  • Certification: Must be a graduate of an accredited school of Ultrasound and at a minimum be Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) with OB/GYN Specialty, issued by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS); Medical Sonographer (RDMS) registration with Fetal Echocardiography issued by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) for maternal fetal medicine specialty.
  • BLS certification required.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities (required):

Mid-level computer skills required with basic medical terminology and customer service skills expected. Knowledge of sonography and healthcare operations. Effective communication and people skills.

Preferred Qualifications Education:

  • Bachelors Degree.
  • Experience: 4+ years OB/GYN Imaging experience.

Knowledge, skills, and ability requirements (preferred):

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: (Medium Max 25lbs), up to 25 lbs., 0-33% of the workday (occasionally) Lifting 25 lbs. max; Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs.; Occasional to frequent standing & walking, Occasional sitting, Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing), Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks. Primarily sedentary with occasional standing and walking. Frequent computer use (typing, reading, writing). Occasional lifting (10¿25 lbs.). Close visual work required.

Environmental exposures include but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure, Bio-hazardous waste chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors, Communicable diseases, Electrical shock, Floor Surfaces, Hot/Cold Temperatures, Indoor/Outdoor conditions, Latex, Lighting, Patient care/handling injuries, Radiation, shift work, Travel may be required. Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators, and environmental conditions may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks. Exposure may include blood-borne pathogens, biohazardous waste, communicable diseases, chemicals, radiation, and varying temperatures. Use of personal protective equipment may be required.
