PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The Monitor Technician is responsible for checking the heart rhythm patterns of patients to detect abnormalities and/or deviations from baseline. They are responsible for ensuring that any cardiac rhythm changes, telemetry box, or monitor bank needs are brought to the attention of the appropriate personnel for timely management.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- The Monitor Technician must be organized, work accurately with attention to detail, balance multiple competing priorities:
- Completion of basic arrhythmias course with annual competency testing
- This position requires employees to demonstrate initial and annual competencies in order to remain in the position.
- Other duties are performed as assigned.
- Appropriate rhythm identification, change in rhythm, rate, and notification the appropriate people
- Constant visual monitoring of the rhythm equipment and ensuring equipment is in working order.
- Alarm management per hospital policy
- Maintaining all log-books associated with equipment, including alarm logs.
- Timely notification of appropriate personnel for battery changes, lead placement, response to alarms, rhythm changes, and patient behavior
- Timely notification of appropriate personnel for any problems associated with a telemetry or video surveillance
- The Monitor Technician is aware of the institution’s responsibilities under health insurance portability and accountability act (HIPAA).
- The Monitor Technician is responsible for contributing to a safe and secure environment, promptly reports safety concerns and pertinent observations to the RN.
- Requires excellent written and verbal communication skills and demonstrates an ability to work collaboratively.
- Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices; reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.
Unit Clerk Duties:
- Pleasantly and effectively communicates to visitors, patients, and the health care team.
- Monitors entrance and exit of visitors and personnel into the nursing unit.
- Triages patient and visitor needs to nursing staff when appropriate.
- Coordinates and performs clerical functions for the unit.
- Maintains medical records according to ChristianaCare guidelines.
- Collaborates with multidisciplinary team and assists in arranging patient transports for procedures when necessary.
- Assist in placing patient consults.
- Operates computer utilizing required computer skills.
- Operates equipment in a safe and accurate manner
- Coordinates maintenance of unit supplies in a cost-effective manner.
- Answers patient call-lights promptly and pleasantly.
- Appropriately identifies patient in all communication, including handling of components of the medical record.
- Demonstrates effective written communication skills.
- Practices professional telephone etiquette.
- Completes mandatory education programs.
- Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices; reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.
- Performs other related duties as required.

Daily frequent contact with all levels of Christiana Care staff, patients, and families.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
High School diploma or equivalent
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to perform effectively and efficiently in crisis situations.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, handle frequent interruptions, set priorities, problem solve and good computer skills.
- Complete a basic arrhythmia course (basic cardiac rhythm knowledge and interpretation) with and pass an initial and yearly competency exam with a score of 90%.
Shift Requirements:
- 7a-7p (3-12 hour shifts per week)
- Weekend Commitment - Every Other Weekend
- Holiday Commitment
